Kannada superstar Yash’s much-awaited action thriller Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has received an ‘18’ rating certificate from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in the UK. The certification details suggest that the film contains intense violence, graphic injury details, sexual content and other mature themes.
According to the BBFC’s official certification details, the Kannada and Tamil-language action film follows the story of the head of a powerful drug cartel in Goa, who ultimately sets the stage for his own downfall. The content ratings indicate that Toxic is clearly aimed at an adult audience and is not suitable for children.
BBFC Rating Breakdown for ‘Toxic’
According to the British certification details, Toxic has received the following ratings across different content categories:
- Violence: 5/5
- Injury Detail: 5/5
- Sex: 5/5
- Threat and Horror: 4/5
- Language: 4/5
- Drugs: 4/5
- Sexual Violence: 4/5
- Suicide and Self-harm: 4/5
The biggest talking points are the 5/5 ratings for violence, injury detail and sexual content. These ratings suggest that the film could feature some highly intense and graphic scenes.
Is ‘Toxic’ More Violent Than ‘Dhurandhar’?
The comparison becomes interesting because Dhurandhar: The Revenge, another recently released violent Indian film, also received a 5/5 rating for violence from the BBFC.
However, there is a difference in the other categories. Dhurandhar: The Revenge received a 3/5 rating for sex and 4/5 for injury detail. In comparison, Toxic has received the maximum 5/5 rating in both categories.
This could indicate that Toxic may contain stronger graphic injury details and more explicit sexual content than Dhurandhar. However, it would not be accurate to conclude solely from these ratings that Toxic is definitely more violent than Dhurandhar. A direct comparison can only be made after watching the film.
‘A’ Certificate in India With a 3-Hour 14-Minute Runtime
Around a week before its UK certification, Toxic also received an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India.
The film’s Indian runtime has been set at 3 hours and 14 minutes. However, the complete details of any cuts or modifications made by the Indian censor board have not been officially revealed so far.
The ‘A’ certificate in India and the ‘18’ rating in the UK both indicate that Toxic is being positioned as a mature, adult-oriented action film.
Why Was the Release Date of ‘Toxic’ Changed?
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic was initially scheduled to release on March 19, where it was expected to clash at the box office with Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge.
However, the makers postponed the release due to the ongoing war situation in the Gulf region and also to ensure that the film could reach audiences across the world more effectively.
The release was later pushed to June 4, but that date was also postponed. The makers have now announced August 26 as the film’s final release date.
Yash, Kiara Advani and Nayanthara Lead the Star Cast
The makers are promoting Toxic on a large scale across different markets. A grand trailer launch event was recently held in Bengaluru, with media representatives from across the country attending the event.
Yash was joined at the event by several prominent members of the cast, including Kiara Advani, Nayanthara and Tara Sutaria.
Yash has also responded to criticism surrounding the film’s bold and intimate scenes. He defended director Geetu Mohandas’ creative vision and made it clear that the film is not meant for children.
